Considerations When Installing A Kitchen Island During A Renovation

Posted on: 21 July 2023

A kitchen island adds visual appeal and functionality to a home, providing options for unique materials and extra features. You can custom-build an island during a kitchen renovation. But how should you design it, and what should you include? To help you answer these questions, here are several key considerations.

Size

You will first need to consider the size of the island. Of course, you are constrained by the proportions of the kitchen. If it's large and expansive, you can opt for a similarly generous island, whereas a small room necessitates a smaller island. A mistake to avoid is installing an overly big island so the space feels cramped and doesn't have the flow for people to walk around comfortably. You also want to be able to open the oven and dishwasher doors with ease.

Keep in mind what features you want to include. A cooktop or a sink will require a certain amount of space. If you have a seating area, ensure that people sitting there can stretch their legs and not feel crowded; otherwise, it won't be the pleasant experience it should be.

Shape

The shape of the island affects aesthetics and functionality. Some features are suggestive of a particular shape. For example, if you want an expansive countertop area or want to incorporate a sink, a square or rectangular countertop might best accommodate those purposes. On the other hand, you might want to create a social hub and include a lot of seating, in which case a curved island may be better. A rounded contour will allow people to face each other as they won't be sitting side by side.

The most harmonious shape also depends on the room's design. If it's industrial and contemporary, a straight-edged island will work best, whereas a curved design may be more fitting in a traditionally styled kitchen. A rounded island can also allow for better traffic flow as it doesn't have corners that jut out.

Design

You also need to consider the island in terms of the colours and textures it brings to the kitchen design. A popular approach is to use the island to create contrast. You can achieve this with respect to the colour of the cabinetry. For example, in a neutrally toned kitchen, you could add a bold island or balance out a bright kitchen with a subtle island.

How Remodelling Can Improve Your Kitchen

If you are feeling bored with the interior of your home, maybe it is time to call in a team of remodelling contractors. This is what I did. It all started when I looked at a photograph taken in my kitchen around 20 years ago. I noticed that the kitchen had not changed at all. It was so depressing. The kitchen had always annoyed me because the shelves were not in a good position and there wasn't enough counter space. I knew I needed to do something. I called a local remodelling contractor and asked him to come around. He carried out the work in a few weeks and I am really pleased with the results.
